Abstract

The effect of six different potting media; top soil (TS), 1:1 mixture of; Top soil and goat droppings (TS+GD), Top-forest soil and w-dungs (TS+CD), top forest soil and; oil palm sludge (TS+OPS), TS+urea, and TS + NPK (Fertilizer) in raising Irvingia wombolu root stock, buddable under one year age were investigated. Variations were observed in the girth sizes of the seedling grown in the different media. The variations conformed with similar differences observed in the nutrient contents of the growth media evaluated. Seedlings of big girth sizes 3.5cm and above gave very high percentage budtake, 72% – 100%. Seedlings with very thin girth, “pencil size”, gave the least and poorest percentage budtake 10%. Correlation matrices of media N2 and growth correlators with seedlings girth showed that the propensity for seedling girth increment strongly dependent on the nutrient status of the growth media.
