Abstract

Studies were conducted on the effect of substrate on the growth of the mycelium and the fruit body production of Pleurotus ostrestus and edible mushroom. The wastes evaluated were Panicum maximum straw, maize cob, sawdust, banana leaves, cocoa shell, soya husk and cocoa shell wastes supported the least. For fruit body production in P maximum straws gave the highest yield while soya husk and banana leaves gave the lowest. These results are discussed in relation to the prospects of cultivating P ostreatus in Nigeria
