Abstract

The word ‘Horticulture’ is derived from the Latin word Hortus, meaning Garden, and Colere, meaning to cultivate. Horticulture has its root in the Genesis of creation when God said: Let the earth bring forth grasses, lawn plants, the herbs yielding seed and fruit tree yielding fruit after their kind. God created man and God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight (Flowers) and good for food (Fruit trees). Horticulture is concerned with those plants whose cultivation brings reward whether monetary profit or pleasure. A comprehension of the science gives meaning and scope to the art of horticulture, and gives room for improvement of centuries old practices.
