Abstract

consumption ofpoor quality food is one of the reasons behind poor health conditions. This could result from the presence of persistent organic pollutants in the irrigation water used for cultivation of short duration crops such as vegetables. A study was conducted to evaluate the level of contamination of vegetables namely Telfairia occidentalis as Vegetable (Vegj and Amaran/hZ/S viridis as vegetable2 (Veg2) around Ogun river at kara abattoir. Soils samples were collected from five locations around Ogun river at 0-25 cm depth. The samples were taken to txe laboratory for routine analysis. Physio-chemical properties analysed include soil moisture, electrical conductivity, total organic carbon, pH and heavy metals. The pH of the soils in ascending order were 7.37>7.09>7.02>7.12 for soil, soil vegetable, and Vegetabe2.
Heavy metals such asand Zn2+ had values in as
(Zn2+)mgkg-l while, vegetabe2 had 0.0002 j,
2.41(Cu2+), 3.48(Pb2+), Organochlorine pesticides in Veg and Veg2 such as Permethrin had 1.84mgkg- , 2.30mgkg- respectively. Amaranthus viridis L was discovered t have more heavy metals compared to Telfairia occidentalis. However, the values of heav metals discovered are generally lower to the maximum permissible limit.
