Abstract

Onion (Allium cepa L) is an important vegetable crop grown extensively in the drier Northern Guinea and Sudan Savannah of Nigeria. Its maximum production is confined mostly to Kano and Borno States (Anthony and Chroiroma, 1990). It is use extensively for culinary purposed mainly because of its flavor and nutritional quality. Purseglove (1975) reported that onions are relatively high n food values comprising protein, fat, carbohydrate, minerals and few vitamins.
Weed control in onion is normally carried out by manual weeding. It is very tedious and time consuming due to a very close spacing adopted in onion cultivation. Chemical weed control is a very good means of overcoming the drudgery in manual weeding. Some herbicides have adverse effects on yield of onion, besides giving weed control.
