Abstract

Experiment was carried out at National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT),Ibadan to determine the best mulching method for the growth and performance of soursop (Annona muricata). Two mulching methods were used: plastic mulch and neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves and the control had no mulch but subjected to manual weeding at 4-6 weeks interval depending on the time of the year. The pre-cropping soil sampling and analysis were done to know the nutrient status of the soil prior to transplanting. At 5 and 7 months after transplanting (MAT),there were no significant differences mulching treatments on plant hight, number of leaves, stem girth and number of branches though significant differences were observed at 7M AT on the number of leaves, however, at 13 MAT,significant effects were observed in all the parameters except for the number of branches, with the neem treatment having the highest values. These results showed that the neem plant had additional advantage apart from its use as mulching materials in the growth and performance of soursop
