Abstract

This study examined farmer’s perception about climate change on citrus production and various ways by which they access weather information in Benue State. Data for the study was collected with the use of quantitative (Focus Group Discussion) and quantitative (Pre-tested structured interview guide). Multi-stage sampling was used to arrived at one-hundred and twenty three respondents for the study. Citrus farmers made up the unit of analysis. Data was analyzed using both descriptive (frequencies and percentages) and inferential statistic (Chi-square and Pearson Product Moment correlation). The results of the study revealed that majority (64.2%) of the respondents’ falls within the age ranged of 35 – 45 years, majority (91.1%) of the citrus farmers are literate, 45.5% of the respondents have 10 – 20 years of farming experience. Fifty percent of the respondents have unfavourable perception towards the effect of climate change on thir production while 57.7% have low information score. Also the result of Chi-square showed that none of the socioeconomic variable was significant related to Perceived effect of climate change on citrus production. In the same vein there was no significant relationship between perception and information sources as tested by PPMC. The study concluded that since respondents are in their active and mainly literate it will be easy for them to receive weather information in prints.
