Abstract

Mineral nutrition is a factor that can be easily modified for plant growth, and consequently amending soil alleviate limitations of nutrient availability and/or absorption in many agricultural practices. Generally, the amendments provide conducive soil and biological factors necessary for improved plant growth through affecting changes in plant growth and development, and particularly chemical composition. A trail was conducted to evaluate the performance of two varieties of guava supplied with poultry manure and inorganic fertilizers applied alone or in combination for over a period of two years. Two varieties of guava seedlings Allhabad and White delicious were transplanted to the field. Cured poultry manure and NPK 15:15:15 were used as organic and inorganic fertilizer respectively. Fertilizer rates were 1kg/stand (0.28ton/ha poultry manure) organic fertilizer +67.5g NPK/stand inorganic fertilizer at four application per year (F1) inorganic fertizer only 135g NPK/stand inorganic fertilizer at four application per year (F2), organic fertilizer only 2kg/stand (0.56ton/ha) (F3) and control (F0). Result showed that plants which received half organic and half inorganic fertilizer (0.28t/ha poultry manure + 67.5 NPK) performed better in terms of growth parameter assessed among the treatments in both White delicious and Allhabad than plants supplied with full organic fertilizer (0.56t/ha poultry manure). However, Allahabad variety had the highest mean value in stem girth and canopy cover while White delicious variety recorded highest mean value in plant height. It was concluded that the use of combined application of poultry manure and NPK fertilizer gave the best performance.
