In a bid to contribute to the Federal Government’s efforts to improve on food security and reduce unemployment of youths, the Institute embarked on training and empowerment of unemployed youths on Tomato and Ginger value addition in order to tap into the wealth creation potentials of the selected commodities. The training covered important aspects of Tomato and Ginger value chains such as nursery practices, production practices, value addition, economics of production, marketing and significance of record keeping for good business management.

The training took place at NIHORT, Bagauda Outstation, Kano State that represents the northern Nigeria. The workshop was widely publicized through print and electronic media. Sixty-five (65) youths participated in the workshop. Forty-four (44) participants were from Kano State while the remaining twenty-one (21) participants were from Kaduna State. Participants attested to the fact that the two crops have nutritional, medicinal and economic importance. It was also believed that increase in production of these commodities will provide gainful employment to the unemployed youths, men and women in the country.
